Two addresses are all it takes. The written flat rate covers both buildings, and we tell you whether the Boston curb permit is worth filing.

A move from NYC to Boston is a one truck, one crew job, and most of what goes wrong on it is paperwork or parking, not driving. We load out of our own facility in Long Island City, Queens, and work all five boroughs. Three things belong to Boston alone: a curb permit the City itself calls optional, the 10 foot bridges that keep a loaded truck off Storrow Drive, and September 1, when most Boston leases start. One crew works both ends, so the people who wrap your things in New York are the ones who unwrap them in Boston. It is one of the shorter runs inside our long distance moving service.

How Long a Move from NYC to Boston Takes

One day, in almost every case. Load in the five boroughs in the morning, 216 miles by way of I-95 or the Mass Pike, unload in Boston that afternoon. The four hours of driving is the predictable part. What stretches the day is stairs, elevator windows and how far from the door the truck ends up parked.

The exception is the calendar, not the road. When the two leases do not overlap we hold overnight and unload next morning, same crew, no transfer. Ask at booking, not on move day.

What NYC to Boston Movers Cost, and What Moves the Number

Studio from about $1,150
One bedroom typically $1,375
Two bedroom from $1,725

Flat rate, written down before anything goes on the truck, still the number when the ramp comes down in Boston.

Three lines build it. Volume, counted off your inventory list or a walkthrough video. Fuel and mileage for 216 miles under load. Tolls along the route.

In Boston the number turns on access, and access starts at the curb. Without a reserved space the crew carries from wherever the truck fits, and a two block carry takes more crew time, the same way a fourth floor walk-up at both ends takes more than dock to dock. That is labor, not a fee invented later. With the permit you pay the City 69 dollars, or about 110 dollars for two metered spaces, and that stays a City line item rather than ours. We pack all of it, some of it, or none of it, and whatever you choose is priced in before you sign. Send both addresses and get a free quote back in writing.

The Boston Parking Permit Is Optional, and You Still Want It

Boston does not require a permit to park a moving truck. Almost everyone assumes it does. What the permit buys is two reserved curb spaces, and on a tight block that is the difference between a forty foot carry and a two block one.

It comes from the Office of the Parking Clerk, not the Boston Transportation Department. One day, two non-metered spaces, two signs included: 69 dollars. Metered spaces add 40 dollars.

The clocks catch people. Online only works when your date is at least 15 days out and no more than eight weeks out. Inside 15 days you apply in person, and that still needs three days. Online, the notice, signs and permit come by mail, usually inside 7 to 10 business days.

The permit covers one day and starts at 7 a.m. Signs go up at least 48 hours before that, and the City recommends three days. The City also provides a flier to put on cars within half a block, at least two days before the move, or one day if the spaces are metered. The space also has to be one you could legally park in anyway. Residential, commercial or metered is fine.

You are the applicant, not us. We tell you how many spaces, metered or not, and the date to file by.

Storrow Drive Is Closed to Your Truck

Moving trucks are not allowed on Storrow Drive. The bridges over it are low, and the City of Boston lists the limit as 10 feet. A loaded box truck does not fit under that.

It reads like trivia until a crew that does not know Boston takes the ramp anyway. We route around it before the truck leaves Long Island City.

September 1 in Boston, and Why You Book It in Early August

Boston turns over most of its housing stock on one date. The City’s own moving page puts it at about 70 percent of Boston leases starting on September 1. The City is passing on a figure it was given, not one it measured, but the effect on the curb is the same either way. For the 2026 move-in period the City put on-street parking restrictions in Allston, Fenway, Mission Hill and Roxbury. Move into one of those on that date and the permit stops being optional in any practical sense.

Book in early August, which also keeps you inside the window where the permit can still be filed online. Outside September, two or three weeks of notice is usually enough here. Moving to Philadelphia or DC as well? Read the corridor guide.

The New York End of a Move from NYC to Boston

Most of the paperwork on this lane sits at the New York end.

In Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, many managed buildings will not let a crew past the lobby until they hold a COI that lists the building and its management company. Every building writes its own requirements, including how and when the service elevator gets booked, so ask for the move-in rules and send us the packet the day you sign. Once your move is booked we issue the COI for either building inside one business day. What we cannot speed up is the building’s approval, which runs on the management office’s own schedule.

In New York our truck takes whatever legal space is open that morning, which is why the Boston permit catches New Yorkers off guard. If either address is a walk-up, tell us the floor and whether the staircase turns, because that sets crew size and crew size sets price. If you are still choosing the date, the cheapest time to move in NYC covers the New York end of it. Our NYC to NJ movers page covers the shorter version of the same paperwork.

Moving from Boston to NYC

The lane runs full both ways and we price it the same: same bands, same three lines, same dedicated truck. Hospital and lab hires, students finishing a program, people who did a September 1 move two years ago and are heading back.

What changes is where the work sits. Northbound, the hard part is the Boston curb. Southbound, it is the New York building: the same COI inside one business day, and a service elevator window the building assigns rather than lets you pick. Send the move-in packet as soon as they hand it over.

The Boston end still needs a plan on the way out, because loading is the side that needs the curb. The permit is worth the same 69 dollars going out as coming in.

What We Will Not Do on This Lane

Your things never share a trailer with anyone else’s. Every move we run between these two cities is a dedicated truck on a direct drive, nothing cross-loaded in the middle. If your load is very small and your dates are wide open, a dedicated truck may be more truck than you need, and we will tell you so up front rather than after you have paid. We will not hand you to another company either.

We do not file your Boston permit. You are the applicant. We tell you which permit, which office, and by when.

And we will not call the permit required when the City calls it optional. Tight block or a peak date, get it. Quiet street in a quiet month, you may not need it.

Questions we get on this route

NYC to Boston Movers, Questions We Get

Do I need a parking permit in Boston, and who applies for it?

It is optional, and you are the applicant, not us. The clock that bites is the online cutoff at 15 days out, because inside that you have to file in person.

Can you deliver in Boston on September 1?

Yes, and book it in early August, which is also the last comfortable point to file the permit online.

My New York lease ends before the Boston one starts. What happens to my things?

We hold the loaded truck overnight and deliver next morning, or your things wait in our own Long Island City facility until the new place opens, our crews at both ends. Say so at booking and it is settled in writing.

Is Storrow Drive a real problem, or a Boston joke?

Real, and it is a routing job, not a driver’s judgment call on the day. We set the route before the truck leaves Long Island City.

How do I check that a Boston mover is legitimate, and does a New York company need anything extra?

NYC to Boston crosses a state line, so whoever moves you needs federal operating authority for household goods, and checking takes two minutes. Ours is MC 1589978 under USDOT 4144902, and we carry NYSDOT 42311 for New York State work. Start at FMCSA Protect Your Move, which tells you to get written estimates from several movers based on an in-person inspection and to confirm the carrier is authorized. On an interstate move you also have to be handed the “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move” booklet. A mover that dodges the question has answered it.
