Two addresses start it. The number comes back with the delivery window it assumes, so you can hold it up against anyone else’s.

We are long distance movers based in Long Island City, and we load in all five NYC boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. From there we run regular lanes down the East Coast to the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida, across to Texas, and out to Colorado, California and the Pacific Northwest, and we go anywhere else in the mainland US on request. Moves to Washington DC, Boston, Philadelphia and the rest of the Northeast are a different service, a direct drive on a dedicated truck, covered further down.

What Long Distance Movers from NYC Cost

Two starting prices, because we run two different services.

  • Regional direct, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Boston and the Northeast: from about $750
  • Long distance, Florida and the Carolinas out to California: from about $1,950

Which one applies depends on where you are going, not how big your move is. A studio going to Philadelphia and a three bedroom going to Seattle are not quoted the same way, and each lane with its own page carries its own numbers, starting with NYC to Washington DC movers, NYC to Boston movers and NYC to Florida movers. For anywhere else, send us both addresses and the flat rate comes back in writing.

Your Long Distance Price Is a Flat Rate. The Quote Is the Price.

Most long distance quotes are not prices. They are estimates, and the number can move after your things are already on the truck. That is where the horror stories come from: a load sitting in a trailer until someone pays a figure nobody agreed to.

We do not work that way. Your long distance quote from Magical Moving is a flat rate. We price the job before we load it, you sign that number, and that is what you pay. If we misjudged the truck we needed, that is our problem, not a line on your invoice.

Only two things change it, and both start on your end: items added that were not on the inventory, or an access problem at the destination that nobody mentioned. We price either one before we do the work, never after.

How Long Distance Pricing Works

Long distance is priced on what you move, not on the hours it takes. Three lines build the number.

  • Volume, meaning how much room your things take up on the truck. A studio and a three bedroom are different jobs.
  • Fuel and mileage, set by the destination. Florida and the Carolinas are our cheapest long distance lanes, Texas sits in the middle, and California, Colorado and the Pacific Northwest cost the most, because the truck is out of rotation longer.
  • Tolls, on their own line.

Access and packing move you within that: a walk-up at either end, a long carry from the truck to the door, how much of the packing you want us to do. All of it goes into the flat rate before you sign.

One thing worth knowing: on a local move the last days of the month can cost close to double, which is why the cheapest time to move in NYC matters so much there. Long distance pricing follows volume and destination far more than the calendar.

Dedicated Truck or Shared Load

There are two ways your things travel, and the right one depends on how much you are moving.

A dedicated truck carries your shipment and nothing else. It leaves NYC, drives to your address and unloads. Nothing is transferred at a terminal and nothing waits for other customers to fill the trailer. It is faster, and less handling means less that can go wrong.

A consolidated load shares trailer space with other shipments heading the same way. It costs less, which for a small studio going to Denver can be the difference between a sensible price and an absurd one. The tradeoff is timing, because the truck runs when the lane is full enough to run.

We tell you which one your move is on before you book, and what each costs. A company that will not tell you that is hiding the delivery window from you.

When Your Things Actually Arrive

Long distance delivery is a window, not a date. Any company promising a fixed day on a cross country move is either charging a great deal for it or about to let you down. Weather, weigh stations, federal limits on driving hours and the other stops on a shared trailer all move the timing.

Here is what we run:

  • East Coast 4 to 15 days
  • West Coast, Texas and Colorado 4 to 21 days
  • Regional direct same day as the standard, overnight on request

You get the window in writing before you book, and we tell you the day the truck leaves. If you need a tighter window, a dedicated truck narrows it at a higher price. To Florida, that is a 2 day window.

Our Long Distance Moving Process

Step 1: Get your flat rate

Give us both addresses and what you are moving. The flat rate comes back in writing, with the delivery window it assumes.

Step 2: Plan the move

We set the date, the truck, and whether your load rides dedicated or consolidated, along with any packing, furniture disassembly or storage you want. This is also when you get the “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move” booklet, which federal rules require us to hand over.

Step 3: Pack and load

Our crew packs what you asked us to pack and loads the truck.

Step 4: Delivery, with a window you get before you book

You have the delivery window in writing before you sign, and the day the truck leaves once it is dispatched. We would rather give you a window we hit than a date we miss.

Boston, Philadelphia, DC and New England Are Not Long Distance for Us

If you are moving from NYC to Boston, Connecticut, Philadelphia, Delaware, Maryland, Washington DC, Northern Virginia or anywhere in New England, many national carriers will quote it as a long distance move. Your furniture goes on a shared trailer with other people’s shipments and you wait out a delivery window.

We do not run those as long distance. They are a direct drive on a dedicated truck with nothing else on it: no terminal transfer, no waiting for a trailer to fill, and same-day delivery as the standard. It is priced as its own service, from about $750. Our guide to Boston, Philadelphia and DC compares the three.

Storage Between Pickup and Delivery, in Our Own Facility

Long distance moves rarely line up cleanly. Your lease ends on the 31st and the new place is not ready until the 10th. A closing slips.

We hold your things in our own storage facility in Long Island City. Not a partner’s warehouse, not rented space in a container yard: our building, with our crews loading and unloading it, so one company is responsible for your furniture from the old apartment to the new one.

That matters more than it sounds. When storage is subcontracted, damage turns into an argument about who caused it. When it is ours, it is ours.

Out of State Movers from NYC

Crossing a state line puts your move under federal regulation, and that works in your favor, because interstate movers have to be registered and traceable.

Magical Moving is licensed and insured for interstate work under USDOT 4144902 and MC 1589978, and for New York State work under NYSDOT 42311. You can look us up, or any company you are considering, before you pay anyone a deposit. FMCSA’s Protect Your Move pages explain what to check.

If a company moving you out of state cannot give you a USDOT number, that is not a red flag. That is the end of the conversation.

Where We Go from NYC

We go anywhere in the mainland US. These are the lanes we run most, and each one gets its own page as it goes live.

  • Regional direct: Washington DC, Northern Virginia, Philadelphia, Boston, Delaware, Maryland, Connecticut, upstate New York and the rest of New England
  • East Coast long distance: the rest of Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida
  • Texas: Austin, Dallas and Houston
  • The West: Colorado, California, and the Pacific Northwest, including Seattle and Portland

If your destination is not on the list, call anyway. We will quote it.

New Jersey we run as a local move, with a page of its own: NYC to NJ movers. Two of the shortest runs have guides of their own: NYC to Jersey City and moving from NYC to Long Island.

Moving Your Business Across States

Office moves across state lines run on the same flat rate and the same delivery windows. We plan the load and the delivery around your business calendar, pack workstations, furniture, files and electronics, and keep the office down for as few working days as possible. For a move within the city, see our commercial moving page.

Questions we get about long distance

Long Distance Moving FAQ

Is the long distance quote the final price?

Yes. It is a flat rate, written down before the truck is loaded. It changes only if you add items that were not on the inventory or we hit an access problem nobody mentioned, and either one is priced before the work starts.

How is a long distance move priced?

By volume, fuel and mileage, and tolls, with access and packing at both ends built into the flat rate. It is not billed by the hour the way a local move is.

What counts as a long distance move?

Generally anything over about 150 miles, or any move that crosses a state line. Moves to Philadelphia, Delaware, Maryland, Washington DC and New England cross state lines, but we run them as direct drives, not as long distance. New Jersey we run as a local move.

How long will delivery take?

On a shared load, 4 to 15 days to East Coast destinations and 4 to 21 days to the West Coast, Texas and Colorado. Regional direct moves arrive the same day as the standard, with overnight on request.

How far ahead should I book?

Two to three weeks is comfortable. We can often take a long distance move on short notice too, if the lane has room, so call and ask before assuming the answer is no.

Can you hold my things if the new place is not ready?

Yes, in our own Long Island City facility with our own crews, so one company is responsible from pickup through storage to delivery.

Do you pack, or do I?

Either. Full packing, partial packing for the fragile things, or you pack and we load. It is all priced into the flat rate.

How do I know you are legitimate?

USDOT 4144902, MC 1589978, NYSDOT 42311. Look us up with FMCSA before you pay a deposit, and read our 900+ five-star Google reviews before you trust anyone with your things.
