Both addresses is enough to start. One flat rate comes back for the move, both buildings included, and we tell you which DDOT dates to work back from.

NYC to Washington DC is 227 miles, about four hours on I-95, and we run it as one working day. Magical Moving & Storage works out of Long Island City, Queens, and loads in all five boroughs. This lane gets a dedicated truck and a direct drive, with no handoff to another company at a terminal. It is one of the routes on our long distance moving service page, where the drive is the straightforward part and the two buildings and the DC permit are the rest of it.

What NYC to Washington DC Movers Cost

Studio from about $1,250
One bedroom typically $1,400
Two bedroom from $1,750

You get that number in writing before we load, and it is the number on the invoice.

Three lines on your quote. Volume, everything on your inventory list or your walkthrough video. Fuel and mileage, for the 227 miles a loaded truck has to cover. Tolls, on their own line.

What moves your number up or down is access and packing. Two flights of stairs in Brooklyn are not the same day’s work as a service elevator feeding a dock. At the DC end it is whether you hold a Reserved Parking space at your door or the closest legal spot down the block, because a long carry adds crew hours. Packing is full, partial, or you box it and we load it. Send the list through the free quote form and your flat rate comes back.

Do You Need a Parking Permit for a Moving Truck in Washington DC?

Yes, and you apply for it, not us. We tell you what to file and which date to work back from.

Parking a truck on a District street takes a public space occupancy permit from DDOT, the District Department of Transportation, filed online in its TOPS system. The event type is Reserved Parking. Emergency No Parking sounds right, but DDOT uses that for construction staging and debris containers, so asking for it puts you in the wrong queue. The fee for a residential moving truck is 50 dollars, plus DDOT’s technology fee, and the permit covers two days at most. If you want the overnight option, file for both of those days when you apply, because the second day is the one the truck actually unloads on.

The signs come next. They go up 24 hours ahead at metered spaces and 72 hours ahead at non-metered ones. You print them out of TOPS once the permit is approved, paid and issued, so they are not a second application.

Neither posting window is your real deadline. DDOT lists a review time of two business days, and its system will not let you pick a date that does not leave room for it. A weekend in the middle stretches that. Apply the week before, not the night before. If Boston or Philadelphia is on the list too, read the corridor guide.

Magical Moving truck loaded for a move between NYC and Washington DC

How Long a Move from NYC to Washington DC Takes

One working day. We load in the morning in the five boroughs, run it down I-95, and unload in Washington DC that afternoon, inside the day your Reserved Parking permit covers.

What stretches the day at the DC end is the permit, not the drive.

Certificate of Insurance and Elevator Booking for Your New York Building

The New York end has to be cleared before the truck is booked: a certificate the building accepts, and an elevator window you actually hold. Many managed buildings in Manhattan and Brooklyn want a certificate of insurance naming the building and the managing agent before a crew gets past the lobby, and the rules are set building by building. We issue yours within one business day of a confirmed booking, for both ends, which is why the COI and the DC permit get started on the same call.

The elevator is the second thing to lock down. In a large building the window can be spoken for well ahead, so ask your management office early. Whichever date you are given is the date you file the DC permit against, and the whole DC clock runs before that date, not after it: two business days of review first, then the posted signs.

Certificate of Insurance, Dock and Move-In Hours at the Washington DC End

What is different at the DC end is that the building’s hours and DDOT’s dates have to line up. If your building runs fixed move-in hours, or holds the dock and the service elevator for a set window, that window is what the permit gets booked around, and we count the review and the posting days back from it. Tell us the window and the block, and send us the building’s rules when you book, so the DC certificate goes out alongside the New York one.

A rowhouse block is the other case in DC. A truck parked legally can still leave a long carry to the steps, which is what Reserved Parking is for.

Moving from Washington DC to NYC

The same run northbound, priced off the same sheet. What changes is which end is the hard one.

Heading north the DDOT permit becomes your loading problem: same TOPS filing, same signs, same two business days. Then New York becomes the hard end, with the COI and the elevator window in front of you. The curb works differently in New York, so the truck takes the closest legal spot near your door. Tell us the block and we will say where a truck can sit and how long the carry is likely to be. For the same building paperwork over a shorter drive, see our NYC to NJ movers page.

When to Book a NYC to Washington DC Move

Two to three weeks out is comfortable, and that is the building and the calendar setting the pace, not us. The DDOT clock inside those weeks is shorter but fixed, which is why it gets started the day you book.

An end of month date is a question of availability, and a weekend sitting inside the DDOT review is a question of filing time. Both are worth asking about early. If a local move is also in play, the cheapest time to move in NYC has the math on what a date is worth. Short notice is not an automatic no, so call (212) 933-9959 and ask.

No Shared Trucks, and We Do Not File Your DC Permit

We do not put your things on a shared truck. Every move on this lane goes out dedicated, and leftover space stays empty rather than filling with somebody else’s boxes. A shared truck delivers inside a window of days rather than on a named date, and your DDOT signs name one date, so the two cannot both be true. That is what makes the unload same-day. It is also the catch: if you own a mattress and fifteen boxes and your date is flexible, a dedicated truck is not the cheapest way to move it, and sales will say so on the phone, not after you book.

We will not tell you three days is enough, and we do not promise you a curb, because the permit is yours to file and DDOT issues it. If it is not issued in time we plan around it: the closest legal position, a longer carry, more crew, and you hear that before move day.

Questions we get on this route

NYC to Washington DC Moving Questions

How much do movers from NYC to DC cost?

From about $1,250 for a studio. A one bedroom typically runs $1,400 and a two bedroom starts at $1,750. Your figure comes from the inventory and the access at both buildings, including whether you hold a reserved space at the DC door.

Who applies for the DC parking permit, and how early?

You do, in DDOT’s TOPS system, under Reserved Parking rather than Emergency No Parking. Leave the two business day review on top of the posting rule, and file the week you book.

Does a mover need federal authority to move me from New York to Washington DC?

A move from New York to Washington DC crosses a state line, so the carrier has to be federally registered for interstate household goods, and that leaves a public record. FMCSA’s Protect Your Move pages explain how to check any mover before you book. Ours is USDOT 4144902 and MC 1589978, with NYSDOT 42311 in New York.

What if my lease dates leave a gap at the DC end?

One night is the easy case. The truck stays loaded and unloads the next morning, which is why the Reserved Parking gets filed for both days. A longer gap waits in our own Long Island City facility, worked by our own crews.
