The Big Question: Should I Tip My Movers?
While it’s not mandatory, we consider that tipping the movers is a nice gesture, especially when the move is well done. However, whether or not to tip movers can depend on several factors, and you should consider them from every angle.
Tipping movers in New York City is a very kind and appreciated gesture. It’s not just a way to financially support someone, it’s simply a way to show how much you appreciate someone’s effort and hard work.
The #1 factor is financial capability.
If you’re not in a position to give tips, don’t feel bad about it – it’s a normal thing. You may not want the additional expense, even though you’ve already utilized their services.
The #2 factor is the quality of service.
Surely, you’ll be more inclined to tip people who made an effort during your move rather than those who complained or, worse, broke your favorite set of glasses, right? The quality of service can even influence the amount you decide to tip the movers.
The #3 factor is the cost of the move.
Some moving companies may include tips in the service price. Therefore, inquire beforehand before the movers complete the move so you’re aware.

How Much Should I Tip My Movers?
The usual tip amount typically depends on the quality of service and your satisfaction with the received moving services. Additionally, this amount may be influenced by the overall moving costs, so keep in mind to stay within your financial means, as mentioned earlier.
Let’s say you had movers who worked for 3 hours. Typically, such tips are given at a rate of $15 to $20 per hour per mover. This means that if you had 3 movers working for 3 hours, the tip would range from $135 to $180.
However, keep in mind that every tip should also be based on the quality of service. If you had movers who efficiently and safely completed your move, consider giving them a slightly larger bonus than the standard rate.
To better understand when to give a larger or smaller tip, it’s best to rely on your own satisfaction and simple reasoning.
For example, if the movers were professional, efficient, fast, and safe, or even courteous and performed some challenging tasks for you, and you had good communication with them, it’s a nice gesture to give them a larger tip.
On the other hand, if the movers were careless, unprofessional, or impolite, then you certainly don’t want to reward them with a larger bonus. Alternatively, you may even consider reducing the tip from the standard amount.
When and How to Tip My Movers?
To tip movers, there are several ways you can do it.
The simplest, of course, is cash. Movers will gladly accept cash as it is the fastest and easiest method of payment. They can distribute the money on the spot, making it the most convenient option.
However, if you’re unable to tip movers in cash, you can do it with a credit card, although not every moving company may accept card tips. In such a case, it’s best to have some cash on hand.
And the last question that surely interests you – when should you tip movers? The best time to tip movers is at the end of the move. This way, you’ll have a comprehensive overview of the entire relocation, and all impressions will be fresh in your mind, allowing you to decide on the tip amount.
However, in the case of long-distance moves, you may have two teams handling your move. It’s advisable to contact the moving company before the move to confirm whether you’ll have one or two teams. Based on this information, you can then distribute tips accordingly.
One team will handle the packing, and the other will likely handle the actual move. It’s fair to tip the first team at the beginning and the second team at the end of the move.
